Exploration: Square Foot Gardening – April 2, 2012

Sunflower Suzi’s new home.

This spring season will be spent preparing our new garden here in Georgia.   As a new resident, I also know that there will be many benefits for joining the local community garden.  In addition to growing healthy food and getting exercise outdoors, I will get to meet many families in my area and make new friends.  I stopped by to take a look at my new plot (#88B) and introduced myself to a woman nearby named Mary. As it turns out, she’s one of the neighbors in my subdivision!  Small world….

She suggested I walk around to get inspiration and see what others have done to get started.  I found some very interesting and fun ideas.

I noticed many of the residents preparing gardens using one foot grids.  I asked Mary about it and she said it’s called the                  Square Foot Garden Method.   Check it out. http://www.squarefootgardening.com/

I went out to Home Depot and while buying seeds, found a handy booklet called “Success with All New Square Foot Gardening” by Mel Bartholomew (also available on Amazon).  What luck!  It’s the perfect introduction to a new way of gardening.

Now Sunflower Suzi’s garden is good to go!   The next time I check in we’ll give you a peek at the early stages creating Sunflower Suzi’s new square foot garden  – so stay tuned!
